What is an Upset Stomach?

An upset stomach is typically stomach pain or discomfort due to various causes. You might have an upset stomach due to excess gas, heartburn, or diarrhea.

Thankfully, there are many over-the-counter medications, such as Curist Gas Relief (simethicone), to help relieve these symptoms!

Are Gas-X, Mylanta, Pepto-Bismol, and Prilosec the Same Thing?

No, Gas-X, Mylanta, Pepto, and Prilosec are not the same thing. They differ from each other regarding what they contain and with regards to who can use each product. Both Gas-X and Mylanta contain simethicone as the active ingredient. Gas-X is available at a strength up to simethicone 250 mg, while Mylanta also contains aluminum hydroxide and magnesium hydroxide in addition to simethicone. So, not only does Mylanta work to relieve gas, it has an antacid to relieve immediate heartburn. Unlike Gas-X, Mylanta is also available in a liquid form.

Pepto-Bismol contains bismuth subsalicylate, which coats your stomach and kills some bacteria that can cause diarrhea. It can also be used to treat an upset stomach and provide fast relief from heartburn. However, if you have an aspirin allergy, Pepto-Bismol should be avoided.

Prilosec (omeprazole) is part of a class of medications called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs). Prilosec works by reducing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. Prilosec can be used either alone or in combination with other medications to treat frequent heartburn, that is heartburn that occurs at least 2 or more days a week in adults. Heartburn can be described as a burning pain sensation or discomfort in your chest. Because it takes time to work, omeprazole is not meant to treat infrequent heartburn or be an immediate relief for symptoms.

What are the Differences Between Gas-X, Pepto-Bismol, Mylanta, and Prilosec?

Gas-X vs Pepto-Bismol vs Mylanta vs Prilosec: Active Ingredients

Gas-X and Mylanta include simethicone as an active ingredient at different strengths, while Pepto-Bismol and Prilosec do not. Here are their active ingredients and available strengths:

  • Gas-X: Simethicone (125 mg, 180 mg, 250 mg)
  • Mylanta: Aluminum hydroxide (400 or 800 mg), magnesium hydroxide (400 or 800 mg), and simethicone (40 or 80 mg)
  • Pepto-Bismol: Bismuth subsalicylate (262 mg)
  • Prilosec: Omeprazole (20 or 40 mg)

Gas-X vs Pepto-Bismol vs Mylanta vs Prilosec: Dosage Form

Gas-X, Mylanta, Pepto-Bismol, and Prilosec are available in different dosage forms.

  • Gas-X: Available as chewable tablets and softgels.

Which Works Better for Gas Pain and Bloating: Gas-X vs Pepto-Bismol vs Mylanta vs Prilosec

Overall, Gas-X and Mylanta, which contain simethicone, work the best for gas pain and bloating. Simethicone helps break up gas bubbles to reduce your gas-like symptoms. Pepto-Bismol and

Prilosec will not get rid of gas, but simethicone will.

Which Works Better for Heartburn: Prilosec vs Pepto-Bismol vs Mylanta vs Gas-X

Prilosec (omeprazole) works the best to treat frequent heartburn. Mylanta and Pepto-Bismol work the best to relieve immediate heartburn.

Generally, heartburn symptoms can be treated with antacids, acid blockers, and proton pump inhibitors. Antacids, like Mylanta, work within minutes, to treat heartburn. Pepto-Bismol is a mild antacid, similarly providing rapid relief. Antacids work by neutralizing stomach acid and help ease discomfort, but their effects only last for 30 to 60 minutes.

Proton pump inhibitors are considered the most effective in providing long-lasting heartburn relief when compared to antacids and acid blockers. Prilosec, or omeprazole, is a proton pump inhibitor and works by decreasing the amount of acid that the stomach produces. However, it can take PPIs up to 4 days for full effect.

Gas-X, or simethicone, is not effective for heartburn as it does not reduce the acid in your stomach. Gas-X is only used to relieve gas and excessive bloating.
